Dental Crowns

What is a crown?

Crowns are a cosmetic and functional restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay. Crowns are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line.  In effect, the crown becomes the new outer surface of your tooth, allowing you to talk and chew with perfect function.

What materials are used to make crowns?

Crowns can be made of porcelain, gold, lithium disilicate and zirconia. Depending on the location and type of crown needed, Drs. Razdolsky or Tincher will help you choose the material that is best for you.

Does Lake Forest Dental Associates do gold crowns?

Yes, we still do gold crowns. However, this type of material is more commonly used on second molars where esthetics are not as much a concern. For some, gold is a great material because it is fracture resistant.

Why are crowns needed?

Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to bind or hold a filling. Unlike fillings which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated outside the mouth. Lake Forest Dental Associates crowns are created in a quality lab from your unique tooth impression. This allows our highly-skilled, dental-laboratory technicians to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then crafted just for you, so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.

Are all crowns the same, what makes your offices crowns different?

At Lake Forest Dental Associates, we believe in using only the best materials with the most qualified laboratory technicians available. We value using high-end materials and master ceramists to give our patient’s long-lasting, beautiful results. We strive for your optimal oral health and strive to give you a crown that we know will serve you best. We are very proud of our work and want nothing more than help you to love your smile.
